Terra Nova's main LNT objective is to not let anything hit the ground.
All members of Terra Nova are expected to keep our camp and the playa free of MOOP, to reduce the amount of trash they create on the playa, and to be responsible for garbage/recycling/gray water removal when they leave.
In addition, all those wishing to join our camp are asked the following questions:
-Do you understand the concepts of Leave No Trace (LNT) and agree to make SURE the camp is spotless before leaving, not only of your own possessions and garbage, but that of others?
-Can you be "kitchen witch" for a day, either primary or secondary?
This person will ensure that LNT is taken seriously in our kitchen space as well as in our other areas.
Applicants must demonstrate an adequate understanding of LNT and MOOP before being allowed to join Terra Nova.
The communal kitchen is expected to be the largest source of MOOP in our camp this year. To prepare for this, our kitchen and other areas will have wind breaks to reduce the amount of random things blowing around. We will also have recycle and trash containers readily available to sort garbage by burnable, recyclable aluminum, and other. We have organized a schedule where crew members volunteer to be "kitchen witch" for a day. This person will take primary responsibility, enlisting the help of secondary kitchen witches, for making sure that the kitchen area is kept clean and free of MOOP, that the burnable garbage is taken to a burn barrel, and that the recyclable aluminum is taken to Recycle Camp every day.
Terra Nova's shower will drain into an evap pond so the water will not touch the playa. There are strict rules in place in regards to what kind of water can be dumped into the evap pond. Also, those using the shower or evap pond are told to plan on bringing home as
much gray water as they put in.
We also educate our members heavily about LNT. Pick it up when you see it, no matter where you are, on playa or off. In past years we have been very close to porta potties, and have worked diligently to raise awareness about what is appropriate to put in the porta potties and what isn't. In some cases, extreme megaphone force (with humor and education) has been used to deter people from putting baby wipes and other unacceptable items in the porta potties.
We go over our camp areas daily as well as nearby public areas to gather MOOP of all types. Sunday and Monday mornings, we will clean our camp by the square inch, including a group "crawl" across our space to get any and all MOOP. Our "Group Moop" is a scheduled event at our camp.
Lastly, 2-3 members from our camp will be staying at least 1 to 2 days after the event to help with extended clean up.
